Ryukyu Kempo Karate and Kobudo
Ryukyu Kempo Karate is an ancient Okinawa Life Protection System. Ryukyu Kobudo is the study of weaponry that complements Ryukyu Kempo Karate providing a Total Life Protection Experience.
Ryukyu Kempo teaches the study and interpretation of Kata (forms or patterns) of pre-defined motions which contain the secrets of the old masters themselves.
The Life Protection skills contained in the kata are the results of over 500 years of real life combat.
Only a properly trained Instructor can unlock all the secrets of Kata.
When untrained teachers attempt to analyse the motion of kata, their interpretations are often unrealistic and are impractical to use in real life situations.
A properly trained Instructor in the Ryukyu Kempo Karate system understands the complexities of motion and the reality of a life-threatening situation. From this understanding, we analyse and practice only the most effective techniques derived from the motion of kata.
When our students study Ryukyu Kempo Karate empty hand Kata in conjunction with Ryukyu Kobudo weapons Kata, the two transform and provide an advanced Total Life Protection Experience.
What is Life Protection?
The ability to protect life is one of the greatest gifts than can be given. Whether it’s the study of First Aid technique, or the ability to render an harmless, Life Protection is a skill which builds confidence and capability within society.
Other martial arts teach self defence. The clue is in the words – “Self” “Defence” they only care about you protecting yourself.
Isn’t it more important to protect all life?
In the modern world, any action you are forced to take to protect your life, the lives of your loved ones, or the lives of anyone else can result in legal action being taken against you. The law allows you to use “Reasonable Force”
In Ryukyu Kempo Karate and Kobudo, we teach methods that render an attacker harmless while minimising the possibility of serious injury.
It’s all a part of our Total Life Protection Experience
Life Protection = Life Skills
The Okinawan warrior, or Bushi, was a highly skilled soldier, teacher and leader.
Their actions in society touched the lives of every Okinawan. They lead by example.
The very essence of Okinawan Life Protection became the core of the Life Skills which made the Bushi the backbone of Okinawan life.
Protectors of the people. Leaders of a country. Ambassadors to their world.
Unlike the Japanese samurai, for whom killing was a legal and acceptable part of their daily lives, the Okinawan Bushi respected the lives of their people and when required to act, took only the actions needed to bring peace.
In modern Karate, and other martial arts, this essence has been lost. In Ryukyu Kempo Karate, this is our Gold Standard.
What do we offer?
What our students say
I have spent most of my life hunting high and low for a style of martial arts that incorporated everything. Everything I looked at had holes, something or several things missing. At 18yrs old I thought and was told that I had found Ryukyu Kempo. It wasn’t until several years later that I moved to Mount Maunganui and discovered Ryukenkan Dojo teaching Ryukyu Kempo karate. I went along for a look. From that first day a fire had been lit in my belly. I knew what I was seeing truly was the real Ryukyu Kempo, as it was intended. I felt excited. I felt warmth and welcome from all who was training there. Ryukyu Kempo and Ryukenkan was so much more than just learning how to punch, and throw a stick around. Ryukyu Kempo was about personal growth and strength both inside and outside the dojo. Not only about respect for others, but respect for myself. I read and use the Dojo Kun and Guiding Principles everyday. They encourage, inspire and challenge me. In Ryukenkan I had found a family of a different kind and such an honour and a lifetime experience training with them all. Because of Ryukyu Kempo and Ryukenkan, I could live again and break through barriers and fears. There is nothing else out there like it or that remotely even comes close. This the real deal. You will not find anything like it anywhere. You want entirety, satisfaction, fellowship with like minded people… Look no further than Ryukenkan – True Ryukyu Kempo, at it’s best. Nothing else will do.
I recommend Renshi Rickard. He is an outstanding martial artist, teacher and mentor. He exemplifies outstanding character, honor and sincerity.
Ryukyu Kempo is a traditional art form with a lineage going back centuries and was very evident the moment I took my first step through the doors some 10 years ago and still remains at the forefront on every class. Hesitant at first, starting a new journey I attended every class and slowly began learning the difference between self defense and life protection which is the heart of Ryukyu Kempo protection and preservation of life. I would say Ryukyu Kempo is a very strong and effective art, stripped of all the flashy moves because in days of old warriors lives depended on their skills to live another day. My skill in practising Ryukyu Kempo grew and so did my confidence and self discipline. I am a`lot stronger person and I encourage you to take that first step
Life protection. The art of Ryukyu Kempo Karate is so much more than kick-punch feel good which you get everywhere. It is an art that you adapt into everything you do. Your everyday life. The way you move and think. The teachings bring out the best in people and those who I train with are a credit to what the art has to offer! The senior students and instructors have a wealth of knowledge and will leave you with a ‘light bulb’ moment just about every class! Real teachings. Proven methods. This is by far the most practical and efficient art i have studied!
I started Karate at the age of 12. Learning discipline, hard work, self control and leadership through everything we did in the dojo with kata, guiding principles and dojo kun really helped me with challenging life tasks OUTSIDE of the dojo. I’m 20 now and still aim to live by the values i got taught 8 years ago and will continue to for life!!!!! The teachings are absolutely priceless.
